Memory remains
in the landscape.
Along the side of a busy highway, at a crossroads, sits a memorial to someone whose life ended in a blink.
There’s no name. Loved ones know who it’s for.
Two candles stand guard in front of bundles of artificial flowers.
Grass has started overtaking the monument. Plastic butterflies are beginning to fade into a sea of green.
In the back is a small flag, rumpled, folded, and teetering on the brink of falling over.
It reads, “Always loved, never forgotten.”
There are memorials like this all over the country.
Ephemeral in nature. Wood, metal, and cloth imbued with the memories of lives gone in an instant.
